The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) or TRL Probe is a simple but very effective instrument. Being easily portable and the fact it does not rely on kentledge, means it is particularly useful in gaining ground characteristics in areas of limited access.
The rapid in-situ method can be performed through core holes or narrow trenches where the traditional plate load method cannot be achieved. From the data set gathered during the test, material layers can be determined alongside their strength and their estimated CBR % value.
